With a moo moo here

Miller is coming right along with her animal sounds, thanks to her favorite song- Old McDonald. Although it's really hard to discern one animal from another, you'll have to trust me that she's a genius. Here she is in her animal sounds debut, along with some basic words.

School

Colby and Miller had their first day of school on Friday. I was on the fence for months about whether or not to send Miller, even though Colby went at the same age and loved it. I agonized over the decision and had many sleepless nights, and finally decided that I would enroll her, but only put her in for a few hours a week. That way, I can put her there instead of the gym daycare, which is terrible, and still have some quality time with her.

Here they are on the first morning before school. Of course, I knew there was no way either would pose, so this is all I could do. I handed Miller a nail file, and Colby tried to restrain himself from pinching her.

Colby ran into his friend Wyatt in the hallway and they were happy to see each other.

At drop off, Colby didn't shed a tear. Miller was fine at first, but started to cry when she realized I was gone. She only cried for about 10 minutes, and then she had a blast the rest of the 2 hours. They had someone there who would take pictures of our kids and show us how they were doing, so that was very helpful. (I have a very cute picture of Miller playing with a binky in her mouth and Mr. Rabbit tucked under her arm, but my scanner is not working)

Update: Scanner fixed. Here it is.

At pick up, Miller gave me a big smile, and Colby gave me my first EVER hug at pick up...it was the first time he did not run in the opposite direction. I had to wait 3 long years for that, but it was worth it.

Soccer

Colby started soccer this past weekend, and he's the youngest player in a class of three to five year olds.

Lee and I were a bit unsure how he would do, but he surprised and amazed us.

He dribbled, kicked, passed, and ran. He followed all the instructions of his coach.

We were just beaming with pride.

**Cue screeching record sound**

NOT.

That's a bit of an exaggeration. No, it's a flat out lie. Those pictures were taken before the class even started, when Lee and Colby were kicking the ball back and forth.

The class did start out promising. Colby thoroughly enjoyed the warm-up.

Jazz hands!

Maybe we should have enrolled him in Jazzercise instead?

After the warm-up, things went downhill quickly.

For the first 15 minutes or so, he was doing things like this:

And for the second half of the class, he did this. If you look closely, you'll see two feet behind that tree.

That's Colby doing his business in the privacy of some thick foliage.

Well, to us, he may as well have scored the winning goal. HURRAY! Colby is pooping on his own! In his diaper! Without crying! And he's off medication!

SCORE!!!!

The lake in pictures

We had a great time visiting Nana and Granddaddy at the lake this year.

Miller had her first boat ride. However, she really was not a fan of the life jacket, so it only lasted about 10 minutes.

Colby drove the boat with Uncle Jack...

And went tubing with daddy.

But the highlight of his trip was the fireman-like hose at Uncle Jack and Linda's house.

We went to a Labor Day parade and caught lots of candy.

Nana and Grandaddy watched the insanity from their comfy seats.

WOW! Look at that. Someone took a picture of little ol' me!

Miller enjoyed shopping for groceries at the children's museum.

Mama said these things are filled with sodium.

Thanks for everything, Nana and Granddaddy. We are already looking forward to next year!

21 tips on how not to fly with 2 kids...

1. Book your flight at one of the busiest and largest airports on a holiday weekend.
2. Schedule the flight for nap time, and (incorrectly) assume the kids will nap on the plane.
3. Leave the house hungry and plan to eat lunch at the airport.
4. Leave the house 2 hours before the flight....the way you'd do it if you were traveling ALONE.
5. Make sure the baby spits up on her shirt on the way to the airport, so you have a faint smell of vomit for the entire trip.
7. Overdress the children and yourselves as if you're flying to Antarctica in the dead of winter.
8. Wait for the bus that takes you from the parking lot to the terminal in the blazing sun.
9. Be the last ones to board the bus, and have them tell you it's too full and you cannot get on. Wait another 15 minutes in the blazing sun for the next bus. Start to wonder if you have given yourselves enough time.
10. Have someone steal your credit card number a week before the trip and use it for a vacation in Italy. Cancel your credit card. Then try and check in for a flight without having the original credit card that you used to purchase the tickets. Prepare to be ushered to the special "these people are suspect" line and have a 15 minute conversation about how you do not have the original credit card because it was stolen. Be prepared to break this down in VERY.SIMPLE.TERMS and repeat it to 5 different people.
11. Make sure your 3 year old is running wild around the airport. Threaten him with spankings and watch how other people scowl at you.
12. Make sure you are now running VERY late and feel the panic start to set it. (Note the perspiration building underneath your winter gear.)
13. Grossly underestimate what a pain in the you know what it is to go through security with 2 children. (yes, even baby shoes come off) Strollers also need to be collapsed...make sure your baby does not want to be held and is twisting and screaming to get down.
14. In your panic, take the stroller up the escalator. Have the front wheel get caught at the top and watch your baby flip over and almost get sucked into the floor.
15. Endure the wrath of your husband for being so negligent.
16. Get on another bus to the terminal. Have your 3 year old almost run off the bus as the doors are closing.
17. Finally get to the gate and be the last ones to board.
18. Have your husband set a land speed record sprinting to the store and buy some drinks for the flight for your very dehydrated (and hungry) family.
19. Try to ignore the smell of urine, as your children have not had a clean diaper since 8am.
20. Divide up the goldfish in your carry on bag and savor them as if it's filet mignon.
21. Order a beer. It'll be the best $7 ever spent.

Richmond visit

Whew, I'm having trouble keeping up with life, much less updating the blog. We had a fun trip to Richmond last weekend, and in a few days, we are headed to South Carolina to visit Nana and Granddaddy.

I don't have the time (or energy) for a full post, but here are some highlights.

-Miller is walking everywhere! She fell and got her first big cut on her head yesterday...the first of many I'm sure. She is quite aggressive on the playground and will push anyone out of the way to get what she wants. Gee, where did she learn that? When she doesn't get what she wants, she has begun to throw little temper tantrums.

-Colby is still afraid of pooping. I have scared all of my friends here out of potty training after what we've been through. He's a little better, but he still complains a lot about his stomach hurting, and we think he's still withholding. It's hard to tell sometimes...I just want him to be his old self again.

Here are some highlights from the Richmond trip:

Miller loved the pool and fountains. (she gets her svelte physique from me)

Miller and Cooper...

Colby has finally gotten over his traumatic swim lesson with "Mister Matt" and is back in the water. He won't go under, but at least he's in it.

Zach was a good sport letting Colby splash and dump water on him.

The Millers were reunited...one a bit more enthusiastic about it than the other.

Did I mention the temper tantums?

Miller and Amelie (my friend Mindy's little girl) at the Children's Museum...Amelie could beat anyone in a staring contest.

I didn't take a lot of photos, but Chip, Jennifer, Braden, Nan and Pop were all there, too. We had a great time and are looking forward to our next adventure!
