The silver bowl

Colby's Nana and Granddaddy gave him a silver porridge bowl on the day of his baby dedication. The instructions specifically stated that this bowl was to be used for his Cheerios.....it was not to be placed on a shelf collecting dust with the other valuables. So, each day, Colby has a snack out of his silver bowl...sometimes Cheerios, sometimes sweet potato puffs, sometimes bits of a cracker.

Colby LOVES to eat out of his bowl.

He also loves to suck on it....

and throw it on the ground.

His bowl just makes him happy! (click for a closeup)

He did it!

Colby pulled himself up today! Here he is in all his glory....on top of his throne....light fixtures that need to be returned to Lowes.

Sleep

To all my readers:

I mean, dear mom:

Man, I am tired! Lee and I feel like we have a 2 month old again. I'm not sure what's going on, but Colby is waking up at night about 3 times each night. Once at 12, once at 2, and maybe again at 5. We are both dragging and a little grumpy. Once you get used to a baby sleeping well, it's hard to go back. I don't have much creativity left in me at the end of the day to post....but I just wanted to check in and say we're still pluggin' along.

Oh, one more thing. Colby is still biting. Apparently me yelping is pretty funny. So is "NO!" And being put down on the floor when it happens is also a good time. He's getting better, but he's still dangerous.

Did you hear it?

This past Mother's Day was definitely one to remember. In addition to it being my first Mother's Day, it was also Colby's baby dedication at our church.

The weekend started off on Friday with a visit from Colby's Aunt Mindy, who was wearing a delicious red necklace and was really fun to jump on. Next, some very special visitors arrived- Colby's Nana and Grandaddy all the way from South Carolina. Saturday we spent the day visiting and catching up, and had a really nice picnic at the park. Colby had his first sensual experience with grass and he really didn't like it very much!

My first Mother's day started off with a special surprise that included 3 cards: one from Lee, one from Colby, and one from Georgia. How did Georgia do that? Also, there was a little bag of goodies from Lee and Colby that were actually wrapped and well presented! (This is progress, folks.) In all seriousness, he could not have made my first Mother's day more special. I'm a lucky gal.

Next, Lee's parents came over and it was off to the church. For a baby dedication, the parents and baby go up to the front of the church during the service, along with the other parents and babies. (there happened to be a total of 3 babies this Sunday) Lee and I discussed for days what might happen when Colby got in front of....oh, I don't know....300 people? (it's a big church) We decided there were 2 possible reactions....#1: He would be so mesmerized by all the people that he would stare into the crowd and not make a peep. OR.... #2: He would get excited and make a whole lot of noise. My money was on #1, but Lee thought it would be #2. Well, as we sat in the church parlor, getting ready for the big debut, we decided to let Colby crawl around and get some of that energy out.

We even let him have a pre-dedication jumping session with daddy:

Were your ears ringing on Sunday....say....around 11:25? I'm pretty sure that everyone within a 50 mile radius heard what went on in in the church. After pulling on the minister's face and mouth (just getting warmed up for things to come) Colby waited for a silent prayer to really let loose. When I say let loose, what I mean is scream/shreik with excitement at the very top of his lungs. Pleased with the echo, he did it again....and again....and again. At one point, I looked up at the congregation, and every single eyeball was on us.....or I should say, Colby. It's all kind of a blur to me now, but I know that I was laughing so hard (still standing up in front of about 300 people) that my body was shaking and my eyes were welling with tears. I looked over at the pew of my family, and they were all red faced and laughing, which only made me laugh more. We made as graceful an exit as possible...and apparently, during the sermon (we were sitting in a back room) the minister spoke about Colby and said he was an up and coming Pentecostal. (you know, feeling the spirit and speaking in tongues)

Anyone hoping that the babies would put on a show definitely got their wish, as Colby did not disappoint. Not at all.

ps. You can click on the picture for a close-up of those teefs. They are big, they are sharp, and they are biting in places they shouldn't.

Cute butt

Have you ever seen a cuter butt? Don't you just want to pinch it? (maybe that's just me)

Why is it so hard?

I like our new town so far. I really do. It's close to everything, there are lots of things to do...lots of things to do with babies. But don't even think about moving here and trying to join a pool. OH NO. It's just not that easy. I've been calling all the pools in the area and there are basically 4 choices. The 2 closest pools have a 5 year waiting list. I'm not trying to join a posh country club....I'm talking about a basic community pool....you know, with cheap plastic chairs, chain link fences, and bomb pops. To get on the waiting list, you have to send a $30-$50 check to EACH POOL. With no guarantee you'll even live here when they call you. However, the redneck pool on the "other" side of town only has a 2 year waiting list. I'll just have to warn Colby to watch out for burning cigarette butts and wads of tobacco as he splashes around the baby pool. We basically have no choice but to apply to every pool because we don't know what will open up first, and I know we'll be more than ready to join a pool in 2 years. Then there's a whole 'nother problem. You pay the one-time dues to join the redneck pool (in addition to the monthly fees), and then the nice clean pool calls you the following summer and tells you it's finally your turn....you have arrived. If you join, you've just thrown $1250 down the drain. Yes, even the redneck pool charges that much to join. Those plastic Walmart pools are looking pretty darn good right now.

Hooray!

I just got a call from the doctor's office- Colby's blood test came back negative for all the foods! This is really great news. It doesn't mean he's totally in the clear (yet) because we still need to do the skin tests, but it's a VERY good sign. I am so happy!

On another note, I want to talk about bath time. There's not much in life that Colby likes more than his bath. Well, actually, there is....eating....and then jumping comes in a close second. But after those two activities, he loves his bath. He plays, he splashes, he squeals, he sucks on the wash cloth (ew), he pees in the water (which is why it's so gross when he tries to suck the wash cloth) and he's only pooped in there once. (now that was gross) He also loves to be wrapped in his green frog towel. I think he just loves being naked. I have tried to let him play naked before his bath, but I end up getting peed on. It's much safer to let him play naked after the bath, as I'm pretty sure he has relieved himself already. Here are some pictures from after his bath last night.

So sleepy....

The frog makes a beeline for the stairs....we have got to get those gates up!

Best Friends

Georgia has a new best friend....or should I say worst enemy. His name is Colby, he is fast, and he can remove a large tuft of hair with a single swift pinch.

We did it

Well, this morning was a big morning for us. Colby got blood drawn for the "RAST" test to test for food allergies. This was after my first attempt to take him, in which I walked in, got cold feet after talking to the mean front desk lady, and walked right back out. This time, I did research and found a child-friendly place (with a nicer lady in the front) and they were really, really great. Colby only cried a couple of minutes, and I cried less than last time. (I'm referring to the time I walked in and walked out) Lee held Colby in his lap and we both held his arm down while they drew the blood- thank goodness they got it right the first time. In a couple of days, we should have the result of the blood test, and the next step is to do the skin prick tests for each food (next month). We are really hoping he has outgrown his intolerance or allergy (we aren't even sure it was a true allergy). The problem with these tests is that they are not accurate, and the doctors will tell you that- the blood tests tend to give false positives, and the skin tests give false negatives. But, in combination, they can give you an idea of what is wrong. We are actually supposed to go back for one more tube of blood to be taken because they didn't want to do it all at once, but the foods I'm worried about were tested this time. (milk, soy, dairy, eggs, casein) The other foods are things like apples and bananas, and the allergist is insisting he be tested for those, but I'm sure they aren't a problem because he eats them often. I called twice to ask that Colby only be tested for a few things, but he won't budge on that. I guess he's doing his job...he has quite a reputation around here and it took 5 months to get an appointment. That's always a good sign, right? So....we probably need to bring Colby back for one more prick just so I don't make the doctor mad, because he will see right though my little plan if I don't. I would love it if Colby could have some regular cake on his birthday. That's the goal I have in sight. (although daddy says no treats....daddy needs to loosen up a bit)

Colby crawling

And now for my first video experiment....this is Colby's first day of crawling! Pretty fast for a first day if you ask me. But I'm biased, of course. He's scooting around pretty well!

My first blog

Well, I'm joining the 2000s and starting a blog. It feels really weird because I don't really know what I'm doing. But I thought this would be a good place to write about Colby and keep track of the day to day happenings....especially because I have a really bad memory. I'm just going to experiment with this first entry and see what this thing can do.
Look...2 teeth! (teefs)
