Why is it so hard?

I like our new town so far. I really do. It's close to everything, there are lots of things to do...lots of things to do with babies. But don't even think about moving here and trying to join a pool. OH NO. It's just not that easy. I've been calling all the pools in the area and there are basically 4 choices. The 2 closest pools have a 5 year waiting list. I'm not trying to join a posh country club....I'm talking about a basic community pool....you know, with cheap plastic chairs, chain link fences, and bomb pops. To get on the waiting list, you have to send a $30-$50 check to EACH POOL. With no guarantee you'll even live here when they call you. However, the redneck pool on the "other" side of town only has a 2 year waiting list. I'll just have to warn Colby to watch out for burning cigarette butts and wads of tobacco as he splashes around the baby pool. We basically have no choice but to apply to every pool because we don't know what will open up first, and I know we'll be more than ready to join a pool in 2 years. Then there's a whole 'nother problem. You pay the one-time dues to join the redneck pool (in addition to the monthly fees), and then the nice clean pool calls you the following summer and tells you it's finally your turn....you have arrived. If you join, you've just thrown $1250 down the drain. Yes, even the redneck pool charges that much to join. Those plastic Walmart pools are looking pretty darn good right now.
